چکیده

Implications for flow resistance and sediment transport Michael P. Lamb* , Fanny Brun and Brian M. Fuller Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, 91125 *[email protected] Key Points: 1. Direct measurements of lift and drag forces were made on cobbles in steep flume experiments with shallow, rough flow over a planar bed 2. As flows shallow, drag coefficients increase, turbulent fluctuations decrease, and lift forces are negative, pulling particles to the bed 3. Results help explain high flow resistance, high critical Shields numbers, and low sediment transport rates in mountain streams

Hydrodynamics of steep streams with planar coarse-grained beds: Turbulence, flow resistance, and implications for sediment transport

The hydraulics of steep mountain streams differ from lower gradient rivers due to shallow and rough flows, energetic subsurface flow, and macro-scale form drag from immobile boulders and channel and bed forms. Heightened flow resistance and reduced sediment transport rates in steep streams are commonly attributed to macro-scale form drag; however, little work has explored steep river hydrodynam...

Experimental Investigation on the Deviated Sediment and Flow to Sediment Bypass Tunnels (SBTs) Using Submerged Plates

Sediment Bypass Tunnels (SBTs) are deviant channels that convey the current containing sediments from the upstream of the reservoir to the downstream of the dam. In this research, by applying submerged plates on the entrance of a 90-degree diversion channel for sediment transport, the effect of hydraulic parameters of flow and changes in the angle of plates on sediment transport and deviated fl...

Patch dynamics and stability in steep, rough streams

[1] The beds of steep streams are typically composed of relatively immobile boulders and more mobile patches of gravel and cobbles. Little is known about how variability in flow and sediment flux affect the area, thickness, composition, and grain mobility of sediment patches. To better understand patch dynamics, we measured flow, sediment transport, and bed properties in two steep channels. Pat...

Comparison of Lift and Drag Forces for Some Conical Bodies in Supersonic Flow Using Perturbation Techniques

Numerical methods are not always convergent especially in higher velocities when shock waves are involved. A comparison analysis is performed to study the supersonic flow over conical bodies of three different cross sections circular, elliptic and squircle (square with rounded corners) shaped using  Perturbation techniques to find flow variables analytically. In order to find lift and drag forc...

بررسی اثر زاویه صفحات مستغرق در کنترل رسوب به آبگیر جانبی در قوس ۱۸۰ درجه رودخانه

One of the methods for sediment control in lateral intake can be application of submerged vanes in front of the inlet. The establishment of submerged vanes in flow path causes a flow diversion toward the inner arc. In this research, the performance of submerged vanes on sediment transport to the inlet at 180 degree of intake has been investigated. Several experiments were carried out in a labor...
